Hawaiian culture is rich with history, wisdom, and traditions that have been passed down through generations. At the forefront of this cultural revival is Kumu Kau’i Peralto, a dynamic Native Hawaiian, Chinese, and Caucasian community organizer, educator, and social justice advocate. Kumu Kau’i is not only an advocate for her community but also a passionate `āina warrior and a guardian of Mauna Kea. Her work embodies a deep respect for indigenous knowledge and its relevance in contemporary discussions.
Kumu Kau’i believes that the essence of culture lies not just in the spoken word but in the connections we forge with our environment and one another. She articulates that our “words” encompass everything that flows through us, creating a bond with the land and our communities. This perspective is vital in understanding how Native Hawaiian heritage can inform our actions and decisions today.
We are thrilled to invite you to a powerful talk and sharing session with Kumu Kau’i, where she will explore the significance of Native Hawaiian traditions and the importance of cultural preservation. Her insights promise to illuminate how indigenous wisdom can guide us in navigating the complexities of modern life while fostering a deeper connection to our roots.
In anticipation of this enriching experience, we’ve included one of Kumu Kau’i’s heartfelt poems, reflecting her thoughts on identity, culture, and the environment. We encourage you to read it and ponder its themes before joining us for the talk.
Bring your family and friends along to engage in this meaningful dialogue, and let’s celebrate the vibrancy of Native Hawaiian heritage together. Kumu Kau’i’s commitment to her culture and community serves as an inspiration for us all, reminding us of the strength that lies in our shared histories and the power of words to unite us.
We hope to see you there!
